This instrument was invented by the (batshit crazy Renaissance figure) Athanasius Kircher. It is known as a Katzenklavier or “cat piano”. It worked by driving spikes into the tails of cats, which would yowl to specified pitches. Although, unfortunately, Kircher is not known to have actually constructed the instrument. Amongst Kircher’s other awesomeness was his theory that after Moses led the Jews out of Egypt some of them got lost and ended up in China. The similarities between Egyptian hieroglyphics and Chinese script was his justification for this claim. Also, he thought that Moses and Confusius were the same dude. What a guy!
Fascinating but still doesn’t explain this!
