Rednano.sg, a new search engine and directory from SPH, which Alvinology welcomes rather enthusiastically as our “own” search engine. For what, our “own” web? But my fight is not with him.
Let’s take a look at Google Singapore, which basically skews your search results towards items of local relevance. Which, by the way, sucks. There’s a link in the bottom-right that says “Go to Google.com” to bring you back to the universal standard. Click it. Unless you’re a xenophobic idiot, which is cute because xenophobia has a pretty obvious Greek root, and you might not be able to use the term to describe yourself. Unless you’re Greek. But I digress.
Google Singapore’s results for “newspaper”:
- The Electric New Paper, Singapore - Front Page
- Newspaper - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
- The Straits Times
- TODAYonline
- Inset link to Google News results
- The Scotsman - Scotland’s national newspaper (huh?)
Rednano’s results for “newspaper”:
- Sponsored link for Singapore Press Holdings
- Sponsored link for Singapore Press Holdings (not kidding)
- Singapore Newspaper. Singapore News in English, jobs, times, newspapers
- Newspaper.com.sg
- About the Conference at newspaper_conf08
- The Worsted Witch » Recycled Newspaper Coasters
For those unfamiliar with our little island, Today is a free paper from Mediacorp (i.e. not SPH). But hey, who cares about accurate, fair, or even useful results?
Rednano’s homepage also has a little link that reads “Find of the day”, which, for today, is the “First ever election 1948”. You’d think that on a search engine, this would give you a nice list of relevant results (either automated or handpicked/edited). But instead it brings up a crappy handmade Dreamweaver page (I say handmade because of the glaring typo on top: 20th Marc 1948h), with two whole lines and the rest of the page blank.
The different reds are killing me. #EF3D35 for the homepage graphic, #FF0000 for the “Find” button (which is hilariously the same as the voting box icon used for today’s Find of the day - you can see the little voting slip), #E11E25 in the actual voting box icon, and some poorly done gradients all around.
Yeah I’m done.
