TOP: The Blind research report. BOTTOM: the Blind in action in the Taiheiyo Evergreen Forests and the Torijon Grasslands
The Blind is the name given to a groundbreaking camouflage cloak used by in-the-field zoologists. The device, that effectively renders the wearer invisible to his surroundings by reflecting light, is a creation of the Institute of Critical Zoologists (ICZ), “an interdisciplinary center dedicated to promoting critical zoological dialogue and research” created in 2007.
A quick visit to the ICZ url address reveals a fully fledged website complete with mission statment, photo galleries documenting the various field projects of the Institute, essays on rare forest insect fauna from the ICZ academic staff along with staff bios, publications and events agenda…
But the ICZ doesn’t exist, at least not as a real Institute. It’s the impressive  creation of Singapore-based photographer Renhui Zhao whose work focuses on the concept of doubt and uncertainty. Using the language of science, and often presenting his work in fake journals or institutions such as his very own ICZ and The Land Archive, Zhao borrows the aura and authority of science and infuse it in his art, leaving the viewer the responsibility to investigate the reality of it all.
Despite doing a bang up job at confusing the viewer, Zhao does however leave some clues on the ICZ website: one essay on leaf insects is aptly named The Great Pretenders, a selected quote from a researcher states “Sometimes I do not believe what I see, I just believe what I know.” while the article introducing the Blind camouflage device is titled The Blind can see…
(note: that cloak … I wanted to believe :/)
