singascene #01: Finders, Keepers
August 9th, 2011. While everyone else is enjoying their super long weekend from calling in sick yesterday, I’m still happily jobless, and I find myself putting together a little mixtape. Armed with considerable online stalking skills and a propensity to download everything I come across, I’ve collected a small stash of forgotten music from my favourite bands — early demos, ripped off abandoned MySpace’s, tracks shared on blogs long deserted, recordings taken from that friend who knows that guy in that band. Some of these might’ve seen limited release physically or online, but those that haven’t… well, I found them anyway. I’ve kept it to the more recognisable names of the past few years, but even loyal fans should be able to find something new.
So it is with some pride — the patriotic kind, mind, lest I be labeled as some kind of indie snob, which I might be, but that is not within the scope of this post — that I present to you singascene #01. I’ve already put in the hard work as a slightly deranged fan and musical pack rat; you need only move your mouse a little over this way to share in the spoils.

Free this Friday night? Chillax with Freddie Bryant and Gilad Dobrecky or help bring Inch Chua to Texas!

World-class jazz/fusion guitarist Bryant and percussionist Dobrecky will be performing a free set at the library@esplanade tomorrow night at 7.

Then at 8.30pm head over to 15 Minutes at Lasalle (next to Sim Lim Square) for some of my favourite local acts — A Vacant Affair, B-Quartet, Caracal, Amateur Takes Control, Plainsunset, and Talk to the Walls — as they put on an unplugged show to raise funds for Inch to get to SXSW.

All this during my weekend confinement :(

End So it wasn’t so bad, and not just because I’ve drastically lowered my expectations since last week. Here’s to better shows.
9:29 Next episode: Plainsunset (yay), Marchtwelve (yay), and Kate of Kale
9:26 Just please be mindful of people who don’t actually enjoy hurting each other?
9:22 A Vacant Affair are on with We Are Not The Same, great song. Jerkwads in the middle, it’s cool if you mosh this one
9:18 Marcus going crazy with the wailing ambient guitar effects — possibly my favourite thing about VR?
9:17 Jerkwads in the middle moshing
9:16 VR’s Spaceman. One of their better pieces.
9:11 Tic Tac ad seems to encourage popping multiple sweets at once — possible laxative effects?
9:07 Jack & Rai again, The Fa La La Song. I love these guys.
9:03 Bad ACS band playing Mr Brightside. Didn’t know they took cover bands. On the bright side (ha ha) that might be an easy way to get onto the show, play some DT or something
9:02 Jack says “expose” and doesn’t look like a creep — Utt please take note
8:57 aughhh Singtel ad prominently featuring Arial Bold
8:55 Presenting Shigga Shay, Chinese kid trying to be a white guy trying to be a black guy. Bloody annoying accent (no offence intended to people who actually, naturally speak like that)
8:52 Utt says “Myanmar”, Adam corrects him, “Burma actually”, Utt says “Myanmar” again
8:49 OMG programmed drums. GUYS CAN I SESSION FOR YOU
8:48 Eden State playing Crash Into You, which I posted earlier today. Guitars’ a bit rough and off intonation? Don’t just slap on a capo (especially on the first fret) and expect it to work perfect guys
8:48 “exposed”
8:43 Utt says “exposed” for the fourth time
8:40 Cam pans past some jerkwad filming with a digicam. Hello?
8:39 For This Cycle are on with just Weiwen and percussion
8:39 Utt makes some tasteless comment about Fiona
8:37 Jack & Rai (and that other guy) play Fiona, awesome
8:35 Idiots making faces at the cams
8:34 Missed most of Vertical Rush’s opening song
