singascene #01: Finders, Keepers
August 9th, 2011. While everyone else is enjoying their super long weekend from calling in sick yesterday, I’m still happily jobless, and I find myself putting together a little mixtape. Armed with considerable online stalking skills and a propensity to download everything I come across, I’ve collected a small stash of forgotten music from my favourite bands — early demos, ripped off abandoned MySpace’s, tracks shared on blogs long deserted, recordings taken from that friend who knows that guy in that band. Some of these might’ve seen limited release physically or online, but those that haven’t… well, I found them anyway. I’ve kept it to the more recognisable names of the past few years, but even loyal fans should be able to find something new.
So it is with some pride — the patriotic kind, mind, lest I be labeled as some kind of indie snob, which I might be, but that is not within the scope of this post — that I present to you singascene #01. I’ve already put in the hard work as a slightly deranged fan and musical pack rat; you need only move your mouse a little over this way to share in the spoils.

weekend gig update

Two shows for good causes! Two shows with Amateur Takes Control! Two shows I’ll be missing because I’ll be running about the jungles of P. Tekong all weekend!

*SCAPE Confessions presents: YOU KNOW, YOU CARE.
feat. Amateur Takes Control with Lunar Node and Silhouette

Saturday, 4th Sep
8pm - 10.30pm
*SCAPE Lab, *SCAPE Youth Centre, 113 Somerset Road

The recent news story of a family’s sole breadwinner killed in a tragic freak accident moved one young band into wanting to use their music to help the family in need.

From that desire to help arose You Know, You Care, a special Confessions initiative by homegrown band Amateur Takes Control. Alongside their friends and special guests Silhouette and Lunar Node, the band believes in using music to raise awareness of the needs of those around us, and wants to encourage young people just like them to use the talents they have to help others.

Tickets at $16 can be purchased at the door. Each ticket comes with a sticker/button pack!

Organised by Amateur Takes Control and *SCAPE. Supported by KittyWu Records. Presented by NYC. Facebook events page here.

Bani Haykal on his trusty xaphoon, Adel on that sexy Fender Jaguar (American Vintage ‘62?), and Kevin Drew. It was an invite-only workshop that Esplanade organised for local musicians. TODAY’s Mayo Martin has the scoop.

Sayonara Supergirl (Amateur Takes Control cover)

Just trying to see if I can do it with one guitar and a single looper. Since it’s a resounding — or reverberating :D —  yes I think I’ll work on this more…

‘The Difference Is’ Live At The Esplanade Outdoor Theatre (10 April 2010)

Whoa, this is a good mix for a live recording. If you haven’t heard ATC recently, the new sound is tight, with space for the three guitars to cut through occasionally. Quite a departure from the clean layers and harmonies, heavy delay and simple loops. I think I still prefer the old dynamics, but J’s more precise/aggressive drumming could be a good thing. And Isa finally added some dirt to the bass or something? Pretty sweet overdrive from where I was sitting.
