basically, in the next few months to come, i will be presenting several solo performances around town, primarily to share my developments in alternative music systems and narratives.
a little background:
presently i am conducting a study on alternative music systems, particularly one which reflects and expresses globalized Asia, if not just Singapore. in this study, my interest is in reinterpreting the already present ideas of music and reconstructing them to what i would deem a vocabulary which best represents the social / psychological climate here. my philosophy is that music, ultimately, is a subjective listening experience, comprising of sounds or no-sounds, organized or otherwise, encapsulated in a time frame, relevant to the individual listener. that by subjecting music to categorization is nothing more than a mere attempt at communicating the music made, but that in itself, has no definite value to the actual composition, only an idea. With no doubt, Bani Haykal is the only local artist that truly inspired me to pursue in writing and art. I fell in love with him the first time I watched him play in B-Quartet at the Esplanade four years ago and have loved him to date. I’m pretty happy that he’ll be curating this weekend’s Night Festival as well as performing together with Mux. I’ve yet to thank him for being a great influence to me but.
This was a good gig!
SOUNDSCAPING: Raffles Place
Sound artist Bani Haykal serenades the suits.
SOUNDSCAPING soundtracks Singapore, and even Raffles Place needs a tune – above the shout of stockbrokers and click of killer heels.
One day at lunch, we play in the land of finance with Bani Haykal. B-Quartet’s frontman, Bani performs at four Raffles Place locations with his voice and clarinet. Using these field recordings, electric guitar is layered on afterwards. With that: four pieces for four Raffles places.
While commerciality is the order of the day there, over here we offer you these melodies gratis. Take a midday stroll with us. Download them via Soundcloud, or stream using Mixcloud. Then again, why not play them in any order you like, or even all together?
In money metropolis, it’s whatever you make of it.

Bani Haykal adds his voice to the chorus. Previously: litford.net, Luqman Hakim.
Bani Haykal on his trusty xaphoon, Adel on that sexy Fender Jaguar (American Vintage ‘62?), and Kevin Drew. It was an invite-only workshop that Esplanade organised for local musicians. TODAY’s Mayo Martin has the scoop.
Interview with the musician, poet, thinker and doer and possibly superhuman Bani Haykal
So I didn’t write about the show last week because if you know B-Quartet you know it was amazing and there’s nothing to say really. What I will tell you is that I was fretting in my seat the entire time because I had a 1130pm boat to catch to a military camp on another island and there was only the slightest chance I would make it if I stayed after 1030 but they were definitely going to play past 1030 even though the ticket said 930, 1 hour, no intermissions. So it turned out they didn’t end too late, but then they came back on for one encore and one encore only, and it had to be Kleptomania, which is just this insane… prog… anthem? Anyway I was late, but I’m done being the safe guy. Time to be young and wild and free and risk court-martial
Be there!
Something You Should Know About Tomorrow Night
If you got that, we should totally hang out after… Look for the dork in the Three Keyboard Cat Moon t-shirt? I didn’t really think through my choice of clothing when I booked in this week.
An interdisciplinary art and performance collaboration between Amateur Takes Control and Bani Haykal (!!!!!), due in March 2010.
