singascene #01: Finders, Keepers
August 9th, 2011. While everyone else is enjoying their super long weekend from calling in sick yesterday, I’m still happily jobless, and I find myself putting together a little mixtape. Armed with considerable online stalking skills and a propensity to download everything I come across, I’ve collected a small stash of forgotten music from my favourite bands — early demos, ripped off abandoned MySpace’s, tracks shared on blogs long deserted, recordings taken from that friend who knows that guy in that band. Some of these might’ve seen limited release physically or online, but those that haven’t… well, I found them anyway. I’ve kept it to the more recognisable names of the past few years, but even loyal fans should be able to find something new.
So it is with some pride — the patriotic kind, mind, lest I be labeled as some kind of indie snob, which I might be, but that is not within the scope of this post — that I present to you singascene #01. I’ve already put in the hard work as a slightly deranged fan and musical pack rat; you need only move your mouse a little over this way to share in the spoils.
Download singascene #01 (.zip)

06 I Am David Sparkle - Dance of Death (Live at Cactus Records)
07 Inch Chua - Cheers To Love (Caracal cover)
08 Elsa Kidspy - The Cloud Song
09 Amateur Takes Control - The Difference Is (live)
10 West Grand Boulevard - DKNY

As Singapore post-rock trailblazers I Am David Sparkle played the first notes of their album launch last night, I was sitting in the rain with camouflage cream on my face. Cleaning rifles, while Swords were Drawn.

Well I’ll be damned, I’m going outfield the very day. For the rest of you, here’s a show to close a year of fantastic gigs:
Esplanade Presents
‘Swords Are Drawn’
Launch of the new I Am David Sparkle album ‘Swords’
Since its inception in 2001, I Am David Sparkle has garnered a strong underground following both locally & internationally with its style of instrumental music & intense live sets. To date, I Am David Sparkle has played tours & festivals in countries such as Malaysia, Philippines, Vietnam, Hong Kong & the United States. This Late Nite sees I Am David Sparkle launching their second studio album Swords to their Singapore fans, before heading off on a series of tours to support this album in Indonesia & Malaysia. It is a collection that pinnacles the quartet’s progress & growth as a unit, consisting of new & previously unrecorded tracks that range from soft, delicate melodies to ones that harp on lower frequencies.

KittyWu x PRAISE t-shirt inspired by I Am David Sparkle’s There Is No Time For Love, Only Chaos

Not sure if these are the final designs, but here ya go. I think the Amberhaze shirt would’ve worked much better with a full-size print on black. It’d make a great poster though!

FANMAIL TIME! By which I mean mail from bands that I am a fan of. One day it will be regular boring fanmail of the mail-from-fans variety. But for now here’s the I Am David Sparkle ‘Live’ at Cactus Records bootleg from their trip to SXSW last year (awesome packaging as usual) and a bunch of Caracal merch.

The old Lunarin CDR wasn’t mail but it was $6 at the Esplanade shop!

I Am David Sparkle have a new page with a bit of news. Also: the Amoeba Music sticker! I hope to one day visit their store in SF…
